Set up your first doctor’s visit

It’s fast and easy

If you’re a new IEHP member, please schedule an Initial Health Appointment (IHA) — your first visit with your new doctor —  right away, even if you’re not feeling sick.

The purpose of your IHA is to help your doctor learn all about your healthcare history, health risks and your preventive care needs. This is also your chance to ask questions about your health and start building a strong bond with your new doctor.

Most new IEHP members should have an IHA within 120 days of enrolling. Members younger than 18 months should be seen within two months of joining.

Don’t wait. Call your doctor’s office today and tell them you want to set up your IHA. The name, address and phone number for your doctor’s office are on your Member Card. Be sure to bring your card with you on your visit as well.

During your visit, your doctor may:

  • Ask questions about your health history or your family’s health history.
  • Ask you to complete a health survey.
  • Talk about health education, counseling and classes.

It’s a good idea to bring with you or write out the names of any medicines you take and how often you take them. If you have any side effects from your medicines, please add these to your list as well. Make sure to bring your list with you to your visit to share with your doctor.

Tip: It’s important to be open to talking with your doctor about your healthcare needs and concerns.

If you’re too afraid to share something out loud with your doctor, that’s OK. Try writing it down and handing it to your doctor.
