Stress signs you shouldn’t ignore

IEHP 30th number

Stress is a normal response to everyday challenges. In small doses, it can even help you stay focused and driven. But when stress becomes intense, frequent or long‑lasting, it can start to change your body and your mind. Watch out for these common physical, mental and emotional signs of stress.

  • Exhaustion
  • Headaches, dizziness, or shaking
  • High blood pressure
  • Stomach or digestion problems
  • Chest pain
  • Tight or tense muscles
  • Aches and pain
  • Changes in sexual health
  • Weakened immune system
  • Feeling overwhelmed or not able to relax
  • Anger or mood swings
  • Trouble focusing or making decisions
  • Constant worry or racing thoughts
  • Feeling sad, unmotivated, or withdrawn
  • Trouble sleeping or frequent nightmares

It’s normal to feel some of these signs during short-term (acute) stress, such as a busy day or a big deadline. But if these signs carry on for weeks or start to get in the way of your daily life, it may be a sign of long-term (chronic) stress – and a sign to reach out for support.

How can you lower your stress?

  • Try calming activities like meditation, yoga, tai chi or deep breathing.
  • Take care of your body. Eat healthy foods, move every day and get enough sleep.
  • Focus on the good things occurring in your day.
  • Let go of worries you can’t control.
  • Say “no” when you have too much on your plate.
  • Spend time with people who make you feel calm, happy and supported.

When should you talk to a doctor?

Reach out to your doctor if you feel overwhelmed, if stress is changing your physical health, if symptoms don’t get better, or if you’re using alcohol or drugs to cope. Your doctor can help you find ways to feel better.

Ask your doctor:
  • What stress symptoms should I worry about?
  • How can I handle my stress better?
  • What stress-relief techniques should I try?
  • Do you suggest a therapist or support group?
