Behind the Numbers: IEHP Member Isaiah O. Represents Real-Life Reasons for Medi-Cal

“Medi-Cal is fundamental to helping with Isaiah’s care.” – Daisy E.

For IEHP member Isaiah O. and his mother, Daisy E., Medi-Cal isn’t just support. It’s survival.

Isaiah, 19, lives with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects his movement, balance and posture. He cannot walk or speak. But thanks to Medi-Cal and in-home care, the Riverside teen — also known by his rapper’s name, Lil’ Ice Bear — leads a life filled with creativity, love and purpose.

“All of his life-sustaining medical care, feeding tube, supplies and medications are provided through Medi-Cal,” Daisy said.  Without it, she added, they’d face impossible choices about his care and whether he could even stay at home with the family.

What Medi-Cal makes possible

Medi-Cal covers Isaiah’s specialized nutrition formula (essential due to severe food allergies), medications to manage painful muscle spasms, and a special communication device that lets him speak — and write music.

“As social of a person as Isaiah is, I don’t believe he would be as healthy without his communication device, since socializing has had such a positive impact on his mental health,” Daisy said. “Having this device also allows him to express himself — how he feels, what he likes, doesn’t like and for his basic needs. It is an integral part of his involvement in the community — and he would not have it, if Medi-Cal didn’t cover it.”

One of Isaiah’s proudest moments? Being featured on ABC7’s “SoCal Strong” segment with his nurse, who also produces his music.

Care for the one who cares

Another vital Medi-Cal benefit is respite care. As Isaiah’s full-time caregiver, Daisy depends on support from licensed vocational nurses to rest and recharge.

“These hours of respite (care) ensure I don’t become burnt out by caregivers’ exhaustion,” Daisy said. “I love caring for Isaiah, but without these hours, my own health would be negatively impacted by not having any time to take care of my own health.”

Every number has a name

Talk of budget cuts to programs like Medi-Cal always gets Daisy’s attention because she knows what’s really at stake.

“These types of programs allow people like Isaiah to live life, a valuable life, as well as to contribute to society in many ways,” said Daisy. Thanks to Medi-Cal, Isaiah continues to live safely at home, surrounded by love and community.

“At home, he thrives,” Daisy said. “He’s happy and joyfully contributes to a beautiful community.”

A message you won’t forget

At an IEHP all-staff meeting in March, Isaiah delivered a message to thousands of team members, using the very device Medi-Cal made possible.

“Keep helping disabled people and people who are poor,” he said. “You are helping someone whenever you’re at your computer helping us get our stuff.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
