This is Your Sign to Quit Tobacco

Five ways to improve your chances

November is National Smoking Cessation Month and your sign to kick your tobacco habit for good. After all, there’s a reason you’re reading this article today. You’re ready to make a healthy change for yourself, your family and your future.

Whatever your reasons, we support you, and we’re here to help you succeed. Here are five proven ways to increase your chances of quitting tobacco once and for all.

1. TRY NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT)

Studies have shown that NRT can nearly double your chances of quitting.

How does it work?

The medicine in patches, gums, lozenges or sprays is used to replace the nicotine your body craves but without all the toxins linked to tobacco products. This helps ease withdrawal and makes it easier for you to break the habit. Other medicines can also help reduce cravings, withdrawal symptoms and addiction.

Eligible IEHP members can get a 2-week NRT starter kit at no cost to you.

To find out if you qualify, call the IEHP Health Education, Promotion & Prevention team at 1-866-224-4347, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

2. GET SUPPORT FROM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST

Your doctor or pharmacist can help you create a personalized quit plan, recommend proven quit‑smoking medicines and NRTs, and guide you on how to use them effectively. Powerful allies when you’re ready to quit, they can answer your questions and provide that extra layer of support when you need it most. Many clinics and pharmacies even offer their own quit‑support programs or counseling.

3. ENROLL IN A COUNSELING PROGRAM

Kick It California connects you with a highly trained Quit Coach (counselor) who stays with you throughout your quit journey. Together, you’ll build a personalized quit plan. Your coach also provides guidance and encouragement along the way, helping you stay focused when quitting feels tough. To enroll, IEHP members can call (619) 866‑0625 or complete their contact form online in English or Spanish.

5. ASK FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COWORKERS FOR HELP

Support from friends and loved ones can help you stay focused and on track. Share your quitting goals and celebrate each success and milestone along the way. According to the American Cancer Society, studies show that “people with strong social support are more likely to quit and stay quit.”
