After the ER

See Your Doctor Within Seven Days

If you recently visited the emergency room (ER),

it’s important to schedule a follow-up appointment with your IEHP-covered doctor within seven days.

Why is this follow-up so important?

Seeing your doctor soon after an ER visit helps you:

  • Review your care: Go over treatments, medicines, and discharge instructions.
  • Ask questions: Share any concerns about your recovery.
  • Update your care plan: Your doctor can make changes based on what happened in the ER.
  • Stay healthier: Timely follow-up lowers your risk of returning to the ER unnecessarily.

If you have a chronic condition like diabetes, asthma or heart disease, your doctor may need to adjust your medicine or treatment plan.

How to prepare for your visit:

  • Bring your ER discharge instructions.
  • Write down your symptoms, concerns and questions.
  • Share any changes in your health since your ER visit.

If you’ve had emergency care, a follow-up visit with your doctor helps keep your recovery on track and supports your long-term health. Call your doctor and make an appointment within seven days. Your health is worth it.
